Scar Work

The McLoughlin Scar Release Technique (MSTR)

A Gentle Approach to Scar Tissue

At ProPT Rehab we use a gentle approach to scar tissue mobilization: the McLoughlin Scar Release Technique. MSTR is a manual therapy approach used to address restrictions associated with scar tissue and adhesions. The technique aims to improve tissue mobility, reduce areas of fascial restriction, and support more efficient movement of the surrounding tissues. Using a non-peristaltic compression action, pneumatic compression devices sequentially move fluid from the distal areas (farthest from the body) toward the proximal areas (closer to the body). This can help support lymphatic and vascular flow.

Restrictions can affect

  • Skin and soft-tissue mobility

  • Fascial glide

  • Range of motion

  • Comfort and movement

  • Local circulation and lymphatic flow

How It Works

Following surgery, injury or inflammation, scar tissue may become adhered to the underlying fascia and surrounding structures.

The technique uses gentle, controlled contact and tissue-loading strategies to encourage improved mobility between the skin, scar, fascia and underlying tissues.

Conditions Treated with MSTR

Surgical scars, including C-section, knee, hip, mastectomy and lumpectomy scars

Burn scars

Plantar fasciitis

TMJD — temporomandibular joint dysfunction

Joint contractures

Axillary Web Syndrome (AWS), also known as cording

Potential Benefits

Mobility

Improve scar and surrounding tissue mobility, and reduce tissue tightness and restrictions.

Movement

Improve flexibility and range of motion, and support functional movement.

Comfort

Decrease discomfort associated with adhesions.

Recovery

Complement rehabilitation after surgery or injury, and help manage tissue restrictions that may contribute to swelling.

Scars We Treat

Every scar is different. These are some of the scars we see most often — and all of them respond to gentle, hands-on release.

Your Scar May Be Affecting More Than You Think

No matter how old your scar is, it may be causing:

Persistent pain
Increased muscle or joint tightness
Restricted movement
Changes in muscle function

A thorough scar assessment can help identify restrictions that may be affecting your movement and function. Appropriate scar treatment may help improve mobility, reduce tissue restrictions and support your overall function and quality of life.

Don't Let an Old Scar Hold You Back

Book a scar assessment with an approved MSTR practitioner and find out what your scar may be affecting.
